Professor Michael Pollack Appointed Associate Dean for Faculty Development

Dean Melanie Leslie has appointed Professor Michael Pollack Associate Dean for Faculty Development. Professor Pollack will replace Professor Christopher Buccafusco, who held the post for the past four years.

Maria F. Garcia-Syngros ’22 is Named a 2022 Equal

Cardozo School of Law is proud to announce that Maria F. Garcia-Syngros ’22 was named a 2022 Equal Justice Works Fellow. She will represent and advise low-income immigrant women and children placed in time-restricted proceedings in Immigration Court while pursuing impact litigation to ensure systemic failings in these proceedings are addressed. Garcia-Syngros will be hosted by the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) and her Equal Justice Works Fellowship is sponsored by Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel.

Cardozo Hosts Leading International Scholars and Advocates for “The Parthenon Marbles Case and the Universal Museum Myth: Policies and Politics”

On April 28th, the law school hosted a day-long symposium on the legal, ethical, and political dynamics surrounding one of the major cultural property disputes in the art world. Leading scholars, government ministers and cultural advocates discussed the arguments over the rightful ownership of the Parthenon Marbles, which were taken from Greece by England during the British Colonial period. Professor David Rudenstine’s decades-long research concluded that the statues should be returned to Greece, and his analysis provided the framework for much of the symposium.

Professor Laura Cunningham Retires After 30 Years of Teaching

Cunningham, a nationally recognized expert in partnership tax law, is a California native who attended U.C. Davis and Hastings College of Law. After earning her J.D., she practiced at Janin, Morgan & Brenner in San Francisco, with a focus on tax and estate planning. She moved to New York in 1987 and earned her LL.M. from NYU School of Law.

Civil Rights Clinic and NYCLU File Lawsuit Challenging Censorship in New York Prisons

On March 31, Cardozo’s Civil Rights Clinic and the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit challenging the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision’s censorship of Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising and Its Legacy, a Pulitzer-prize winning book by Dr. Heather Ann Thompson.

Cardozo Law to Host Symposium on Parthenon Marbles Case and Cultural Property Ownership

The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University will convene international art law practitioners, distinguished scholars and a Greek delegation on April 28 for “The Parthenon Marbles Case and the Universal Museum Myth: Policies and Politics,” a symposium on cultural property ownership. The event will focus primarily on the cultural property dispute between Greece and Great Britain over the Parthenon Sculptures, which were taken to London in the early 1800s by the British ambassador Lord Elgin.

Section 230 Panelists Discuss the Law, the Internet, and Potential Reforms

“25 Years of Section 230: Retain, Reform or Repeal," hosted by Cardozo’s Arts and Entertainment Law Journal, was held March 31. The event focused on the law which is a section of Title 47 of the United States Code, enacted as part of the US Communications Decency Act, that generally provides immunity for website platforms with respect to third party content.

Dean Melanie Leslie '91 hosted a special in-person breakfast to celebrate the generosity of scholarship donors and the accomplishments of student recipients at Cardozo on March 25. Students and donors spoke about the impact of scholarships on their careers and on the Law School, as well as the value and responsibility of supporting the next generation of Cardozo students. Dean Leslie announced the recipient of the Mark Whitlock Scholarship Fund award, which went to 3L Grayson Moronta.

Dean Melanie Leslie Appoints Professor Luís Calderón Gómez to the Faculty

Dean Melanie Leslie is pleased to announce Luís Calderón Gómez will join the Cardozo faculty as an Assistant Professor of Law starting in fall 2022. Calderón Gómez is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Tax Law at the NYU School of Law. He has taught Tax Policy Seminar and Taxation of Property Transactions and his current research centers on tax law, law and philosophy, and international law.

William Ury Receives International Advocate for Peace Award as Part of Melnick

Author, academic, anthropologist and negotiation expert William Ury was selected to receive the 21st IAP award. Ury is co-author of “Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In,” an international best-selling book considered one of the primary business negotiating texts of the modern era.

Cardozo held its second annual Entertainment (E-Law) Week with a panel of experts in the art, filmmaking and archival industries to celebrate the life and work of Gordon Parks. A photographer, musician, writer and film director, Parks was the first African American photographer for Life and Vogue magazines.

Dean Melanie Leslie Appoints Jacob Victor to Cardozo

Dean Melanie Leslie has announced Jacob Victor will join the Cardozo faculty as Associate Professor of Law starting fall 2022. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Law at Rutgers Law School where he teaches property and intellectual property. Victor’s research focuses on how the law impacts innovation, culture, and the deployment of new technologies.

Cardozo’s trial advocacy programs include ITAP (Intensive Trial Advocacy Program) and the Benedict Morelli Trial Team. The combined opportunities are considered integral to students’ preparation for trial experience during their law school journey.
