Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University, and Dean Melanie Leslie welcomed guests to Cardozo’s first in-person event since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, featuring two Cardozo community members who have shaped the New York City commercial real estate market. Cardozo’s “Cocktails and Conversation” at City Winery in Manhattan featured Robert T. Lapidus ’86, President & Chief Investment Officer at L&L Holding Company, and Cardozo Board of Overseers member Stephen B. Siegel, Chairman of Global Brokerage at CBRE Group. Seeger Weiss LLP was the Presenting Sponsor for the event. Contributing Sponsors included CBRE Group, Cole Schotz P.C., Fried Frank, Madison Realty Capital and Meltzer Lippe. Their generosity raised $55,000 for student scholarships at the law school, kicking off a new comprehensive capital campaign at Yeshiva University. YU’s campaign, launched on December 5th, aims to raise $613 million over the upcoming years to ensure student success in a changing world.

Punishment Without Trial: Burns Center Hosts Virtual Book Talk on the Implications of Plea Bargaining

Carissa Byrne Hessick, Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Law, and author of “Punishment Without Trial: Why Plea Bargaining Is a Bad Deal” discussed her book’s arguments and implications for legal ethics in a virtual book talk with Professor Jessica Roth. Roth, who is CoDirector of the Jacob Burns Center for Ethics in the Practice of Law, asked Hessick about the history of plea bargaining, how it encourages lying, its impact on victims and how all of these factors can put lawyers in potentially problematic positions.

Immigration Justice Clinic Files Suit to Highlight Inhumane and Discriminatory Treatment of Black Immigrants in Detention

Cardozo’s Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic is looking for answers from the federal government about the abuses perpetrated against Black immigrants detained in immigration detention centers. The clinic’s student team filed suit against ICE and the Department of Homeland Security in the Eastern District of New York on November 10 with and on behalf of their clients and co-counsel, Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) and the American Immigration Council (AIC).

Andrea Schneider Appointed to Cardozo Faculty as Professor of Law and Director of the Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution - Professor Lela Love to Remain on as Founding Directo

Dean Melanie Leslie has announced that Andrea Kupfer Schneider has been appointed Professor of Law and Director of the Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution, effective June 2022. Professor Schneider is taking on the directorship from Professor Lela Love, who built Cardozo’s conflict resolution program into a Top Ten program in the field. Professor Love will continue her work at the law school as Founding Director of the Kukin Program and Professor of Law.

Lawyers Behaving Badly: Episode 1 - The Executive Branch

What are the risks and ethical responsibilities for lawyers working in the executive branch when asked to defend actions that raise serious constitutional concerns? On November 4 the Jacob Burns Center for Ethics in the Practice of Law held the first discussion in a new series called “Lawyers Behaving Badly,” hosted by Co-Directors Jessica Roth and Anthony Sebok. The first session, entitled “Episode One: The Executive Branch”, featured Cardozo’s Professor Kate Shaw. Shaw is a constitutional scholar and has served in the White House Counsel’s Office as a Special Assistant to the President and Associate Counsel to the President in the Obama Administration.

This Isn’t History, It’s America: Criminal Defense Clinic Hosts Screening of the film “Attica”

“There are many incomplete narratives about what happened… this film tells a story from the perspective of the survivors of the brutality,” Vincent Pullara, Legal Clinic Program Coordinator, said in his opening remarks. Cardozo’s Criminal Defense Clinic held the screening of the 2021 documentary film “Attica” on November 9 followed by a panel discussion with Tyrone Larkins and Lawrence Akil Killebrew, two men who were incarcerated at the Attica Correctional Facility during the 1971 Attica Prison Uprising.

2L Staff Editors Victoria Budhan and Noah Page Win Regionals, Advance to Nationals at ABA Negotiation Competition

The Cardozo ADR Competition Honor Society achieved another win this weekend at the American Bar Association’s Regional Negotiation Competition with 2L Staff Editors Victoria Budhan and Noah Page, coached by 3L Senior Editor Alexandria Becker, taking first place in the final round, and advancing to nationals which will be held in Feb. 2022. The competition was hosted virtually by the Regent University School of Law.

Dean Melanie Leslie Announces Professor Anthony Sebok Named the Joseph and Sadie Danciger Chair in Law

Dean Melanie Leslie has announced that Professor Anthony Sebok will hold the Joseph and Sadie Danciger Chair in Law at Cardozo School of Law. The Danciger Chair was established in 1981 and was most recently held by Professor Emeritus Monroe Price, Cardozo’s former dean. Sebok is the co-director of Cardozo’s Jacob Burns Center for Ethics in the Practice of Law.

Fashion Director Vanessa Friedman, Chief Fashion Critic for The New York Times, outlined the future of the fashion industry in a forum presented by Cardozo’s FAME Center and cosponsored by Loza & Loza LLP, the Cardozo Fashion Law Society and the Cardozo Alumni Association Retail and Luxury Alumni Group. Professor Barbara Kolsun, the director of the FAME Center for Fashion, Art, Media and Entertainment, posed questions that provoked a discussion about the intersection of race, gender, politics and fashion, as well as legal issues of the industry and its relevancy in a pandemic-weary world.

Name, Image, and Likeness: Sports Law Panelists Discuss New NCAA Policies

The FAME Center and Cardozo Sports Law Society held a virtual panel on October 12 to discuss the recent NCAA Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) movement and its impact on collegiate athletes. Sports attorney Dan Lust from Geragos & Geragos moderated a conversation between Zac Hiller, NFL agent; Tim Nevius, former NCAA investigator and lawyer; Brian Socolow, Co-Chair of the sports practice at Loeb & Loeb; Tamara Britt, General Counsel of Manhattan College; and Jonathan Israel, Co-Chair of the sports industry team at Foley & Lardner LLP. Panelists discussed the roles that agents and attorneys play in representing students and navigating the changing regulations in states across the country.

Professor Rebecca Ingber Appointed Counselor on International Law at the U.S. State Department

Rebecca Ingber has been named Counselor on International Law with the Office of the Legal Adviser at the U.S. Department of State. She will assist the Legal Adviser in providing counsel to the Secretary of State, and through the Secretary, advising the National Security Council and the President on the international and domestic law aspects of policy positions and plans. She will also help develop the State Department's position in U.S. litigation involving international and foreign relations law issues, including on matters of war and national security.

3L Student Tae Chang Wins First Place in 2021 American Journal of Mediation National Dispute Resolution Writing Competition

Tae Joon Chang, 3L student and former Mediation Clinic student, won first place in the 2021 American Journal of Mediation National Dispute Resolution Writing Competition with his article "Risk Analysis, Reality Testing, and Mediation." This is Cardozo's second win in ADR writing competitions for the 2020-2021 school year. Sean McLaughlin '21 won the 2021 James B. Boskey Law Student Essay Competition on Dispute Resolution sponsored by the ABA Dispute Resolution Section.

Cardozo Faculty Ranked 33rd in U.S. for Scholarly Impact

Cardozo Law School’s faculty ranks 33rd in the nation for scholarly impact, according to the newly released version of the Leiter Scholarly Impact Score, which is conducted every three years by Professor Greg Sisk and colleagues at the University of St. Thomas School of Law and reported in Brian Leiter’s Law School Reports. The report looks at mean and median citations to tenured faculty scholarship for the years 2016-2020 inclusive.

Sean Lauron McLaughlin '21, who was a student in Cardozo's Kukin Program for Conflict Resolution, is the winner of the 2021 ABA James B. Boskey Law Student Essay Contest on Dispute Resolution. McLaughlin did an internship with the SDNY Mediation Program, focusing on supporting remote mediations and was the Editor-in-Chief of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Competition Honor Society.

Cardozo School of Law opened its doors to the newest group of J.D. students on August 16, to welcome the Class of 2024 – the first time since March 2020 that a large group of students could be together in the building, due to closures and social distancing restrictions that were implemented during the pandemic.
