Description

This presentation details considerations that informed Seton Hall University Libraries’ decision to end its subscription to OCLC’s hosted digital content management system, CONTENTdm; the selection process for a new digital asset management system (Digital Commons); the challenges and costs associated with extracting content from CONTENTdm; and a digital collection migration workflow from CONTENTdm to Digital Commons that was developed in response to those challenges and costs. Two major contributions arise from this presentation: a migration workflow that may be adopted and adapted by institutions wishing to migrate their digital content from CONTENTdm to Digital Commons or other digital asset management systems; and an adaption of a Python script that enables one to retrieve access images quickly from CONTENTdm's user end. The presentation also features additional scripts for eliminating duplicate files and renaming files as they are retrieved from CONTENTdm and for generating URLs for batch import to Digital Commons to expedite content preparation for ingest.
