Awards on May 23, a yearly event that honors students, alumni and community leaders who have made strides in public service over the past year. This year’s ceremony celebrated those who work to protect and advance the rights of marginalized communities in the public and private sectors.

Cardozo Welcomes the 2023 May-Entry Class

The first members of Cardozo’s Class of 2026, the “May class,” began their law school journey last week.
There are 41 students in this year’s May class, with most hailing from New York, New Jersey or Connecticut. The class also features students from Arizona, California, Washington D.C., Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. In addition to domestic students, Cardozo welcomed international students born in China, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, India and Iran.

Shelley Wu '23 and Ilona Ehrlich '23 Selected as 2023 Recipients of Mark Whitlock Scholarship

Cardozo School of Law is pleased to announce Shelley Wu '23 and Ilona Ehrlich '23 as the 2023 recipients of the Mark Whitlock Scholarship.
The Whitlock Scholarship was established by the friends and family of Mark Whitlock '10, who passed away from brain cancer while he was a student at Cardozo. The Whitlock family created this scholarship to celebrate Mark's joyous spirit and vitality. It is awarded to outstanding third-year J.D. students who, through individual effort, energy, spirit and initiative, contribute to and/or expand and strengthen student life and community at Cardozo. This year, for the first time, there are two scholarship recipients.

Bruce Bryant, Released After 30 Years in Prison With the Help of the Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo Law, Visits and Thanks Cardozo Students

In an emotional visit to the Cardozo Law campus on April 26, two days after his release from prison, Bruce Bryant thanked students from The Perlmutter Forensic Science Freedom Field Clinic who helped him win clemency.
A round of applause echoed through the hallway as he arrived with Josh Dubin, the executive director of The Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo Law.

It was a day of jubilation for Bruce Bryant, the first client of The Perlmutter Center for Legal Justice at Cardozo School of Law as he celebrated his release from prison on April 24th, after New York State Governor Kathy Hochul granted him clemency in December.

Heyman Center Panel Discusses Non-Compete Clauses
Heyman Center on Corporate Governance
The Federal Trade Commission’s controversial proposal to ban employee non-compete clauses was the subject of a panel discussion moderated by Cardozo Professor Sam Weinstein on April 3. It was sponsored by the Heyman Center on Corporate Governance. Designed to protect company trade secrets, client lists and other confidential information from being divulged when employees move to competing companies, non-compete clauses have been expanded in recent years to include workers in a variety of low-paying jobs ranging from custodians to security guards. They are so common that it is estimated that 18% of employees are required to sign them, prompting the attorney general of New York and others to file lawsuits against the practice.

Cardozo Mourns the Death of Benjamin B. Ferencz

Cardozo School of Law and Yeshiva University mourn the passage of Benjamin B. Ferencz, the last surviving prosecutor of the Nuremberg trials and a deeply passionate supporter and friend of Cardozo Law School and its students, who died on April 7 at an assisted living facility in Boynton Beach, Fla. He was 103.

Israeli Supreme Court Project at Cardozo Law Passes 10 Year Milestone

April will mark ten years for a project at Cardozo School of Law unlike any in the world. The Israeli Supreme Court Project (ISCP) has provided lawyers, judges, political scientists and historians with invaluable resources on issues that have shaped democracy in Israel. The ISCP has translated over 400 opinions of the Court into English from the original Hebrew. These translations are archived on the website Versa as a repository, where relevant articles are also published in a blog devoted to current cases on the docket. They are studied by scholars, laypeople and U.S. Supreme Court Justices, and they are used as part of the curriculum in courses at American undergraduate universities. They bear important ideas and theories on democracies and legal doctrine around the world.

OUTLaw Sponsors Screening of Film about a Louisiana Law that Makes Gay Sex Work a Crime Against Nature

Cardozo’s OUTLaw, the student organization serving LGBTQ+ law students and their supporters, sponsored a screening of an award-winning documentary that follows a group of Black trans women in New Orleans who are fighting to repeal Louisiana’s CANS (Crime Against Nature by Solicitation) law that targets LGBTQ+ people.

The FAME Center, Sports Law Society Host “50 Years of Title IX: The Pivot to Justice in Women’s Gymnastics”

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, The FAME Center and the Sports Law Society held a virtual panel on January 30 featuring three women who advocate for change in the world of women's gymnastics. One of Title IX’s most visible impacts is the inclusion of women in sports. According to a study by the Women’s Sports Foundation, female participation in high school sports rose from 290,000 in 1972 to 3.4 million in 2019. The impact of Title IX has extended to professional athletics as well, with major advancements such as the creation of the Women’s National Basketball Association being credited in part to it.

Cardozo Hosts “Making a Career Working for LGBTQ+ Rights: An Alumni Panel”

Five Cardozo alumni shared their stories about fighting for the civil rights of members of the LGBTQ+ community, in a powerful 90-minute talk moderated by Dean Melanie Leslie ’92 and sponsored by OUTLaw on February 23. The event was held in the Jacob Burns Moot Court Room with 95 students and faculty in attendance.

The Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School is proud to announce that the Hon. Joseph A. Greenaway Jr., U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, will deliver the commencement address for the law school’s 45th graduation ceremony.
The Hon. Joseph A. Greenaway, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, is an integral part of the Cardozo community, serving as an adjunct professor teaching courses on trial practice and appellate advocacy to great acclaim.

Gloria Steinem to Receive 22nd International Advocate for Peace Award

The Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution (CJCR) of the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law announced that world-renowned writer, activist, and organizer Gloria Steinem will receive the 22nd International Advocate for Peace Award (IAP) on March 29, 2023. Ms. Steinem joins two former United States presidents, business leaders, musicians, filmmakers, and others who have previously received the IAP Award, which recognizes an individual, organization, or group that has made significant contributions in the field of conflict resolution and the promotion of peace around the world. Ms. Steinem has been a preeminent international advocate for equality and feminist movements for over 50 years.
